Introducing Shahmat Analytics

Shahmat Analytics started about a year ago as a personal project. The original goal was simple — I wanted to learn more about data analytics, and as an active chess player, using my own games felt like the most natural way to do it.

What began as a learning exercise turned into something more. I started analysing games for colleagues and chess friends, presenting findings on patterns they hadn't noticed in their own play. The response was always the same: "I had no idea my endgame was that much worse than my middlegame" or "I didn't realise I blunder twice as much with less than a minute on the clock." The data was telling stories that standard game reviews never could.

By August 2025, with the rapid improvements in AI-assisted development — particularly terminal-based AI tools and later Claude Code — I was able to turn those experiments into a proper platform. Shahmat Analytics was born.

What Shahmat does

Every chess platform gives you a game review. You play, you lose, you click "review", and it tells you where you blundered. That's useful for a single game. But it tells you nothing about you as a player.

Shahmat takes a different approach. We analyse your entire game history — hundreds or thousands of games — running every move through Stockfish 18 at depth 20 and extracting 164 data points per move. Then we aggregate those data points and surface the patterns that no single-game review can show you.

The result is a picture of your chess that goes far beyond accuracy percentages.

Reports break your game down across 8 categories — tactical sharpness, opening preparation, positional play, time management, endgame technique, resilience, decision quality, and overall performance. Each dimension is scored and benchmarked, so you can see not just where you stand, but where you stand relative to other players.

The Lab is a configurable chart builder with 70+ metrics. Pick what you want to measure, choose how to slice it — by time control, opening, colour, rating range, date — and build the chart that answers your specific question. No two players will use the Lab the same way, because no two players have the same blind spots.

AI Coach lets you ask questions about your games in plain English. Unlike generic chess AI advice, our coach has access to the full data context of your game — 164 data points for every move, for both you and your opponent. It identifies patterns, suggests improvements, and highlights the things you're already doing well.

3D Board Control renders an interactive surface showing how control shifts across an entire game. You can filter by piece, colour, game phase, and move type to see exactly where your play changes.

Deep Game Analysis gives you a move-by-move breakdown with evaluation data, move quality labels, complexity scores, board control heatmaps, weak square detection, and outpost analysis.

Why we built this

Chess has experienced extraordinary growth since 2020. Platforms like Chess.com and Lichess have brought millions of new players to the game. Content creators on YouTube and Twitch have made chess accessible and entertaining in ways that didn't exist a decade ago. Broadcasted super-tournaments have turned top-level chess into must-watch events.

We want to contribute to that momentum. Our aim is to offer a different lens on the game — one that uses in-depth analysis and aggregated data to dive into the particularities of a player's style, strengths, and areas for improvement. We believe that helping players understand their chess at a deeper level is one way to sustain the growth of this community.

While we think the platform is particularly useful for players in the 800–2000 rating range — where targeted improvement has the biggest impact on results — Shahmat is open to any player who's curious about the data behind their games.

How it works

Connect your Chess.com or Lichess account, or upload a PGN file. Select the games you want analysed. Each game is processed through our dedicated Stockfish server. Once complete, your reports, Lab, AI coach, and game analysis are ready to explore.

No subscription. Credits are purchased once and never expire. You get 10 free game analyses and 1 AI session when you sign up — no card required.

Where we're headed

We're under no illusion that the platform is finished. It isn't, and it probably never will be. We're committed to continuous improvement — new features, better visualisations, deeper analysis. The goal isn't to reach an end product but to build a platform that always has player improvement at its core.

If you want to see what it looks like before signing up, the demo uses 2,282 Magnus Carlsen games in the full platform interface. No account needed.
